History of Screen Printing

Silkscreen printing, an artisanal technique with a rich history, originated in China during the Song Dynasty (960–1279 AD) as a method for transferring designs onto fabrics.  This method was later adopted and refined by other cultures, including Japan, where simple stenciling techniques were employed to create imagery on fabric.  Traditionally, silk was used as the mesh material, which is why the process became known as “silkscreen” printing.  Over centuries, this technique has evolved but remains a cornerstone in garment printing due to its durability and quality.
